An acrylic hard court is a rigid slab with a textured paint layer on top. That has three consequences. The bounce is high and, crucially, consistent — a ball does the same thing every time, so there is no excuse for a mistimed swing. The court grips the ball more than grass does, so topspin bites and kick serves jump. And because there is no give underfoot, every change of direction goes into the player’s joints rather than into the ground, which is why hard-court seasons are where bodies break down.
Speed varies more than people assume. The paint’s sand content, the ambient temperature and the balls all move the dial, which is why one hard-court tournament can play noticeably faster than another. Cool, humid night conditions slow a court; hot, dry afternoons speed it up.
The practical lesson is that hard court punishes specialists. A build with a 90-rated serve and a 55-rated return will cruise through two rounds and get dismantled in the quarters, because from that point on every opponent can handle pace. The builds that go 7–0 tend to look unspectacular on paper: nothing below the mid-seventies, a genuine strength or two, and enough movement and mental rating to survive a fourth set.
